A group of 11 young people, aged 13 to 15, were honoured with a Garda Youth Award for their outstanding work on the Pathways to Nature project at the Abbeylands Youth Centre.
The centre had become overgrown and neglected, with many in the community assuming it was no longer in use. The young team transformed the space by clearing out old planters, cutting back hedges, removing rubbish, and replanting the area with fresh shrubs and flowers. They also straightened remaining planters and replaced overgrown soil and plants with new greenery.
The project was a powerful example of youth-led environmental action, with the young people engaging community members at different stages to support the transformation. Their hard work not only revitalised the centre but also brought people together and helped reconnect the space with nature.
Their achievement was recognized at the Garda Youth Awards ceremony in Waterford, celebrating their positive contribution to the local community and environment.
